The Key To Getting Paid For Doing What You Love

Want to know ONE  essential secret to becoming a success? First provide value to others.

A lot of people are good at this part.

Yet they then say to me “Matt, I’m fine with providing value. But I don’t feel comfortable actually charging people money for what I do. Acting like a hustling salesperson isn’t my style”. I hear this complaint all the time from people who want to start businesses and begin as entrepreneurs. They work and slave their guts out trying to make an incredible product, only to feel guilty about promoting their work.

I don’t want you to feel that guilt

In this week’s LOVELife I teach you how to capture the maximum value for your efforts and how to get over any guilt about earning money for your passion.

  • Fantastic Matthew! This needed to be said. And by the way, your practical wisdom (whether it’s through your “free” videos or your products for purchase) is much appreciated and priceless!

  • This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time. I know that I have to change my attitude towards self promotion and learn how to sell my products. It is tricky. It is almost like selling part of myself. I am pianist/composer and I truly love what I am doing. I know that I have to get on with business side of it otherwise I will give up. I got stuck as a result of this ambivalent feeling. Watching your video was one of the steps in right direction. Thank you for making it.

  • Amazing view Matthew! Never thought about your advice, it’s true that when we add value, we should’nt be afraid to ask money for it. Have a great day an dkeep up the great work!

  • Thanks for bringing up the topic!
I do agree that many talented people who have a lot to offer are ashamed to sell and ask for money. And although i like and deeply respect people who focus more on their work instead on how much money they make, i think it is necessary and legitimate to ask for money. But I am no fan of nebulous selling tactics!
There is nothing for free anyway. People believe it’s for free but they are paying with their data, information or consumption behavior. What did Vivienne Westwood say in alpbach: “buy less, choose well, make it last.”

  • Hi Matt,

Great advice as always! And very timely for me personally. I’ve ventured onto the entrepreneur route because I have always admired those who have their own businesses. So I decided to create a business out of my passion. And even though I worked as a manager for a retail store for a long time, it can be something of an odd feeling to charge for my own product/service and making sure I’m asking for the true value of my service rather than lessening the price because of feeling guilty that I’m charging in the first place. And you’re so right when you said that if you don’t charge, then what could be a potential business becomes simply a hobby. If you love to do something and you are good at it, you should definitely be paid for the value you offer. Thank you, Matt, for affirming that I’m on the right path!
